The Challenge

A disease that's invisible — until someone chooses to look.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects hundreds of thousands of people in Japan — yet remains poorly understood by the general public. Many patients, particularly young women, live with the condition in relative silence, often feeling unseen and unsupported.

For World Lupus Day 2020, Sanofi Japan wanted to do more than raise awareness of the disease. The goal was to create a campaign that gave lupus patients themselves a platform, one that would build community, drive genuine engagement, and reach people who might not yet know they were affected.

The challenge: design a campaign with emotional resonance strong enough to break through, while remaining sensitive to the personal nature of living with a chronic illness.

"The insight was simple but powerful: lupus patients want to be seen — as full people, not just patients. 'Notice, and be noticed' was built entirely around that truth."

The Solution

"Notice, and be noticed" — portraits, stories, and a community built around visibility.

Insentiv created a multi-platform awareness campaign centered on a striking photographic portrait series. Working with acclaimed photographer Yuri Hanamori, three young women living with lupus were photographed — not as patients, but as individuals: vivid, compelling, and fully themselves.

The portraits formed the visual heart of the campaign, appearing across a dedicated Instagram page, a carefully designed photobook, and a physical photo exhibition. The Instagram page became a gathering point for the lupus community, a place to share stories, find support, and feel visible.

By centering real patient voices and faces rather than clinical messaging, the campaign created the kind of authentic connection that drives meaningful behavior change.
